1 Corinthians

Introduction to 1 Corinthians
We call this 1 Corinthians, but it is actually not Paul's first letter to this church. He had sent at least one prior letter (1 Cor 5:9) - they had written him in response. 1 Corinthians is Paul's response to their letter.

1 Corinthians 1-2
The Message of the Gospel - Christ Crucified

The Corinthians were desiring Greek philosophy and "wisdom." Paul assures them that his gospel is quite simple: Christ crucified.

1 Corinthians 2
The Mystery of God Given to Us

Paul says the mystery of God is revealed through the crucified Messiah and is "freely given" to us - this is the first recording of Paul's great teaching, salvation by grace through faith.

1 Corinthians 3
How Leaders should Build God's Temple

Paul uses himself and Apollos as day laborers in God's field, then as builders of God's temple. The church in Corinth IS God's temple to replace the Temple in Jerusalem.

1 Corinthians 4
What Do We Look for in Our Leaders?

[This video includes the congregation "Comments Time" at the end]
Paul challenges the Corinthians who are judging him and calling into question his status as an apostle.

1 Corinthians 5
Church Discipline

What we must do when a member of our congregation is openly living in a way that is inconsistent with clear biblical mandates.

1 Corinthians 7
How is Marriage to be Viewed in the Church?

Paul and his views of husband and wife have been misrepresented, especially in the USA over the last 30 years. This is the most lengthy exposition in the NT on marriage.

1 Corinthians 8 - Meat Offered to Idols and Stumblingblocks
Paul urges the church to stay away from the idol temples, but the meat used in idol worship is not "unclean." Part 1 of a 2 part teaching.

1 Corinthians 9-10
Matters of Conscience, Part 2

Chapters 9-10 of 1 Corinthians finishes the discussion in this letter of meat offered to idols and what we call "matters of conscience." We also read Romans 14 which is the final word from Paul on the topic.

1 Corinthians 11
Headship: Women's Role in the Church

This is a discussion of a very misunderstood text in 1 Corinthians. Paul is urging the women in the church to abide by some common cultural norms in their worship, but he is NOT commanding them to keep silent!

1 Corinthians 11 - The Lord's Supper (Eucharist)
Paul lays out HOW we are supposed to celebrate and remember the Last Supper of Jesus. The Corinthians are not following the tradition properly.

1 Corinthians 12 - The Gifts of the Spirit
The gifts of the Spirit are still active and real. The body of Christ needs everyone to know and operate in their giftings, talents and strengths.

1 Corinthians 12 - Gifts of the Spirit (Part 2)
The Church is to function like a human body - the Body of Christ - each part doing it's role and ALL parts equally valued.
