Introduction to Hebrews
The Letter to the Hebrews is a unique New Testament document.
We are not 100% sure of the author or the audience, but there are numerous aspects of this letter that ONLY appear in this letter.
Hebrews 4 - We Need to Enter God's Rest
Although we should serve God, NONE of our spiritual WORKS give us "credit" with God.
So what is God's rest?
Hebrews 5-6 - Jesus is our High Priest
The writer of Hebrews is the ONLY NT writer who speaks of the office of High Priest - the idea that Jesus is the High Priest of the New covenant is a central theme in this letter/sermon.
Hebrews 8-10 - Jesus, the New Covenant
This is the only NT text that clearly speaks of the "old" covenant and states that the "old" covenant has become obsolete. Jesus is the High Priest of the New covenant - in His blood celebrated in the Eucharist.
Hebrews 11 - The Faith Hall of Fame
We tend to read Chapter 11 through a rose-colored lens. Take another look at these characters and what you find is a bunch of sinners and failures. At the end of the teaching we watched a video. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBasZWjd92k
Hebrews 12 - God's Discipline
God allows us to go through difficulty and hardship. Sometimes He ordains it. We need to embrace the difficulties of life as God's discipline - "God disciplines those He loves."
